Girlguiding Durham North Website

Hello everyone

I hope you are all enjoying the Centenary Celebrations.  There are so many adventures nationally, at Region, County and locally that I’m sure every girl and young woman will attend at least one event and have their ‘mountain top moment’.

Everyone is so busy – our County planning teams, Commissioners, Advisers and leaders – making this year very special.  Thank you for all that you do.  There’s great fun and excitement in the planning and in the taking part – see the photographs taken at our first adventure the Rainbow Princess Party.  It was certainly a day the girls will always remember.

Check out the details in the newsletter of the other adventures that are to follow – for Brownies, Senior Section, the Murder Mystery Weekend for adults and the Northumbria for leaders’ weekend!  I’m particularly looking forward to the Concert at the Tyne Theatre and the walk to Humshaugh for reflections. Final plans are being made for the Guide Centenary Camp / Activity Day and the Hogwarts Express.

Veda Gent our President is collecting material to record the history of our County. So if you’re interested please get in touch with her – some interesting stories are unfolding.

Lots of you have attended our various trainings and there are more advertised in the newsletter – for experienced leaders and new leaders, plus the County Training Day.  Please support your new leader to complete the Leadership Qualification as soon as possible.  There is a series of training to enable new leaders to do this - it can be done in 6 - 8 months!

We’re looking forward to learning our total membership numbers this year. Numbers have increased steadily in the County over the last four years.  So if you haven’t paid your census fees (membership fees) yet or received your invoice check out the information in the newsletter

 Password enquiries and Census Invoices

If you have not received your Census invoice, please contact the Finance team at Broadheath by e-mail 2010info@girlguiding.org.uk.

Finally I look forward to seeing you and your girls at the Centenary Celebrations!

Safe From Harm Reminder

There has been a lot of media publicity in recent months about safeguarding children. Girlguiding UK operates a Safe From Harm Code of Practice that we all must follow. This is to ensure the safety of all members, including ourselves as leaders.

It is important to think about the way we behave towards the girls in our units. Unnecessary physical contact, for example, sitting girls on our knees, should be avoided. We may think we ‘know our girls’ but remember, we only have contact with them for a very small part of their lives, we do not know what else is going on in their lives outside of Guiding. It is easy for parents to misinterpret a situation, particularly in light of the amount of recent media coverage of safeguarding issues.

If physical contact is needed, for example, tending to an injury, then ensure two adults are present.  The safe from harm code of practice states that we should never believe “it could never happen to me”.

If you want to know more about Girlguiding Uk’s Safe from Harm Code of Practice there are regular trainings held. See the training section of the newsletter for details.
